Tropical Storm the storm is forecast to become a uncommon category five cyclone as it turns toward Jamaica, causing dangerous sudden floods and mudslides.

This weather system, which recorded wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to make landfall by midweek, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Advisories of power cuts and disruption to utilities have been announced as this storm brings up to 30 inches of rain and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Seek shelter now," locals have been advised.

This hurricane is the thirteenth storm in the current Atlantic season, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Category Five Storm Threat

A highest-level hurricane is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Although Melissa is set to reduce in intensity to a fourth-level storm before arriving at the island, experts said there was "minimal real distinction in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "just as powerful" when it strikes the country.

Immediate Preparations

With storm-force winds and rain anticipated well in advance well before it moves across the island's interior - perhaps encompassing the national capital - alerts state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"Several days of destructive gusts and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and multiple mudslides," urged weather authorities.

The country's head of government the official commented: "I know that there are many Jamaicans who are worried, who are extremely apprehensive, and appropriately: concern is justified.

"But the best way to manage anxiety and any apprehension and concern is to remain prepared."

Residents are being advised to fortify their houses with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to accumulate basic necessities.

Broader Impact

Advisories are also active for parts of Haiti such as the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where the hurricane is projected to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Rock slides currently triggered by the storm have already killed two in the country, according to emergency services.

Future Path

Melissa is predicted to cross Cuba by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and out into the open ocean.

By the time it reaches Cuba, it is forecast to have reduced to a third-level cyclone.
