Revitalized Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces
A comeback the Russian player won his maiden title for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.
Medvedev, a former world number one, has experienced a difficult year, managing just one win at the Grand Slams and undergoing a difficult moment at the American major.
Medvedev's varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serve in especial - caused him dropping out of the top ten and finally splitting with former mentor Gilles Cervara.
Now working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a tightly fought three-set win over opponent Corentin Moutet.
It is his first trophy since the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt from March of that year.
Victory also means the Russian has won 21 championships at 21 different tournaments.
"For the first time I have attended a competition with my two daughters at once, so to win a championship is really nice," said ranked player Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my second daughter her name, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child Alisa was born was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six championship matches, comprising in that event in the past months.
The player's retrieving strategy and recurring reactions on the tennis court had led some to doubt if his capacity to compete at the top level was concluded.
However the athlete has implemented adjustments in the past month, striving to come to the net and perform assertively, supported by an improved service.
Medvedev recovered from a disadvantage in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, taking 4 of the concluding five games to go ahead.
Both players exchanged service breaks in the following set before Moutet, bidding for his first professional title, took control to push for a final set.
He defended four early opportunities in a tight third set before the champion secured a break to 15 to secure the win.
Appropriately, he earned the win with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
